Literary Crafts for Teens

Creativity and service combine in this idea for an activity for a teen advisory board--painting bookends for YA shelves.
Here is another source of ideas, on Pinterest, for literary-themed painted bookends.

News Literacy

Teens need skills that will help them use social media in responsible ways.  If they are interested in politics, they can use Facebook and Twitter to participate in conversations on these topics.  A program on accuracy, bias and fact-checking could help teens learn how to verify before they post.  Here are some sites that they (and adults, too) can use to check the facts:
  1. www.factcheck.org
  2. www.politifact.com
  3. www.opensecrets.org
  4. www.snopes.com
  5. www.truthorfiction.com
  6. www.hoax-slayer.com
Consider inviting a journalist to present a program on accuracy in the news and how teens as both consumers and creators of content can be more aware of bias in the news.
