As teens discover their identities, writing about their experiences can be helpful in developing a capacity for self-observation and reflection. Teen Ink, a publication of teen writing since 1989, has a section on teen memoirs. Libraries may want to consider subscribing to the print edition of this publication.
TED Talks: Teens may want to do their own TED Talks--this offers a possibility for a public program for your community, presented by your teens. This can be an opportunity for teens to explore a topic of interest to them over the summer and to develop a presentation on it.
Future Ready with the Library: Connecting with Communities for College and Career Readiness Services
The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), in partnership with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL), is implementing an innovative project that will build the capacity of small, rural and tribal libraries to provide college and career readiness (CCR) services for and with middle school students. For more information, go here, and consider applying for participation in the next cohort!
YALSA also maintains a wiki of information about college and career readiness. Partnerships with other organizations can help young teens begin to connect their interests to possible opportunities for college and/or careers. Rural teens face choices that differ from their urban peers; this project will develop programs tailored to small, rural and tribal libraries.
